Sr 2 is the newest and the most effective locomotive in Finland. The
new Sr 2 locomotives will operate at speeds up to 200 km/h in Intercity
service, and will also haul heavy freight trains. About 50% of the
locomotive will be manufactured in Finland. First locomotives from a
serie of 20 were delivered in 1996. On 12th January 1999 VR ordered 20
locomotives more and on 29th December 2000 another 6 locomotives, so
total number of Sr2 locomotives will be 46 on year 2003.
Sr2 is a member of the "Lok 2000" family and the design is closely
based on the Re 460 of the Swiss Federal Railways as well as the Re 465
of the Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon Railway. Norway State Railways
NSB
has ordered same locomotive with type name
El18
.
The VR performance specification requires:
-
Superior running characteristics throughout, especially in curves
-
The ability to travel at 200 km/h over straigth sections of existing
tracks
-
Minimal pressure waves when passing other trains, particulary in tunnels
-
A total mass limited to 82 t
-
Optimal adhesion under all track conditions
Optimal high-speed and curve capabilities are combined within the same
motive power unit. A completely new bodyshell and bogie design is also
required. The structural design of the light-weight body was
computer-optimized and the overall configuration tested in a wind
tunnel. The air conditioned and pressure-tight driver cabs are of
fibre-reinforced plastic sandwich construction.
The electrical equipment supplied by
ABB
emdodies converter technology with three-phase
traction motors and the latest GTO (gate turn-off) power thyristors, as
well as "MICAS" microprocessor control using optical fibres. In view of
the high power requirements, each traction motor is supplied from
dedicated inverter, resulting in both improved performance and reduced
wheel maintenance. Braking energy is fed back into the catenary.
