Kerava-Vuosaari

In Helsinki there are two historic freight harbours at Länsisatama (west harbour) and Sompasaari (Sörnäinen freight station. These are, in future, to be zoned for housing and a new port to the east of Helsinki will be built at Vuosaari. The new harbour needs extensive road works and a new railway line which will be built to Savio from where the line will follow the main line to Kerava. The length of the new line will be 19 km of which 14 km will be in tunnel. The deepest point of the tunnel will be about 60 m underground. The railway will cross a 200 m bridge in the vicinity of the natural preservation area near the harbour.

The new railway line and harbour is expected to raise rail's market share of port traffic from the present 10% to about 30%. The line will be electrified at 25 kV AC. The present harbour lines Helsinki-Länsisatama and Pasila-Sörnäinen will be lifted. The cost of line is 130 million euros.
