First railway in Finland was Helsinki-Hämeenlinna line opened in 1862. First diesel powered wagon was Ds1 in 1928 (actually DMU). First diesel locomotive was Vk11 in 1931. But use of diesel locomotives was bigger than steam locomotives only from 1964 onwards (Valtionrautatiet). First electricified line was Helsinki-Kirkkonummi opened in 1969 with first EMU Sm1. Last steam locomotives were in normal traffic in 1975. Last narrow-gauge railway Humppila-Forssa closed in 1974, but it is now a museum railway.
Last DMU Dm9 ran in 1990, but DMUs came back in 2005 with new Dm12 rail car. InterCity traffic began in 1988. Pendolino S220 traffic began in 1995. Double decker InterCity2 waggons are used in InterCity trains since 1998.
